In 1968, a
system was establised to identify books and
other publications. The ISBN
(International Standard Book Number) system
uses the ISBN to track books. The ISBN
number is a set of number and or letters,
separated by hyphens. It is usually on
the back cover near the bar code.

If you
know the ISBN number for the book you will
need for a college class, it will make the
online search much quicker. Most on-line
bookstores will let you search by ISBN number.
This will ensure that you get the
correct book, as each edition of a book has a
different ISBN number.

If you
don't know the ISBN number for the book you
will need, simply ask the professor.
Many times they will list the ISBN
number right on the class syllabus.
If the professor doesn't know the ISBN
number, simply stop by the college bookstore
and look on the book.
